How does a lidar system use lasers to measure things? There are different ways to collect lidar data. You can collect it from the ground, from space, or from an airplane. The type of light is dependent on the type of measurement. The computer, the light, and the laser all work together. The laser scans the earth. A pulse refers to a burst of light energy that is emitted by the earth. Pulses of light energy travel to the ground and return to the light system. The lidar uses the speed of light to calculate the distance between the speed of light and travel time. This calculation gives us how far it travels to the ground.
